The six page internal report compiled and submitted by CrimeBranch officials in early August 2009 and sourced by The Goan was preparedafter the CID tracked Mohammed Ahmed Zarar Sidibappa alias Yasin Bhatkal overtwo months. The report recounted that on July 21, 2009, Zarar, along with fourSaudi nationals and a few local youth were closeted in a secret meeting at thehome of a Baina resident for over three hours. The report revealed that Zararalong with a man called Hussain and few others would recruit young men agedbetween 20-25 from Bhatkal and Baina. These youth would spend the night thereand were then sent to unknown locations the next morning. The report does notfix any motives.
The report further stated that Bhatkal alongwith Hussain hadearlier in June 2009, recruited 12-15 boys from Karnataka (Bhatkal) and Goa(Baina) and sent them to unknown locations in Mumbai on unknown business. Thereport pointed out that “till date, no one is aware regarding the mentionedboys what they are doing? And whether they are in Mumbai or elsewhere”. (quotedverbatim without grammar corrections)
Zarar was back in Goa again a second time on August 2009again for two hours where he was seen inspecting a construction site oppositeShafi Masjid. Thereafter the report makes a mention of his associate Hussiantravelling in and around Islampur, Baina. The trail then went cold when CrimeBranch Goa’s officials visited the Anti-Terrorist Squad’s Offices at Churchgateand Nagpada, and the CID Crime Branch Unit III in Mumbai where they were toldthat Zarar was never on their list. This, of course is disputable, as the CrimeBranch report had stated that Zarar and his family members were interrogated byMumbai ATS in mid-2008. This was independently confirmed to The Goan by sourcesin the Mumbai ATS
The report did get its facts right, but never saw the lightof the day as no action was taken.
